The Story of the Melody Inn Restaurant

Picture
First opened in 1977, the Melody Inn Restaurant is the creation of Chef Hans Burri of Lucerne, Switzerland. After studying the intricacies of Swiss & French cuisine as an apprentice at the Palace Hotel on the shores of Lake Lucerne, Hans set off for adventure throughout Western Europe. Eventually landing in the Bahamas, he spent three years as the Executive Chef of the thirteen restaurants on the tropical beaches of Paradise Island, now home of the Atlantis Resort. With the experience of cooking at and operating restaurants in many countries, he opened the Melody Inn Restaurant in downtown Coral Gables. Producing a combination of fine food, quality service, and interesting variations to Swiss-French cuisine that most Floridians had not yet experienced, the restaurant soon became a success amid the bustling growth of South Florida in the late 70s and early 80s.

In 1980, a new hire by the name of Margaret began a career that would change the business forever. Working as both a cook and a captivating hostess, Margaret was the addition that the Melody Inn needed. To satisfy her inexhaustible desire to learn new cuisines and the art of running a successful restaurant, Margaret worked closely with Hans to help expand the business.

The two were soon married and the business prospered with each sharing the responsibilities of hosting, cooking, and caring for customers six nights a week. Over the years, the Melody Inn became a place known for its charming atmosphere, outstanding service, and exceptional cuisine.

After 26 memorable years in Coral Gables, the Melody Inn was relocated to Vero Beach, Florida in October 2004. The restaurant has continued to serve a wonderful collection of traditional Swiss and French cuisines along with new creations that take advantage of the fabulous seafood and produce available year-round in Florida.

Today, the two Chef/Owners have been happily married for nearly 30 years with two children; Hansruedi, a graduate of the University of Florida now living in Chicago, and Jennifer, who is studying Fashion Merchandising at Florida State University.

The Melody Inn is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 5:00 pm. Come try some of Margaret’s famous deserts like the fresh-squeezed Key Lime Pie!
